"The
potential for rural regions to profit in a carbon-constrained economy is
significant"
- 'Reaching
for Renewables' report, Trevor Budge et al.
Our regional advantages are:
- Substantial renewable energy
resources, enough to provide our own energy requirements and to export zero
emission energy to others.
- Substantial potential to sequester carbon and
to provide offsets to others through re-vegetation programs.
- Average energy prices that are already higher, so
renewables will be cost-effective here (particularly in niche areas) before they
are cost-effective in cities.
- Space and scope for development of new energy
technologies, with fewer planning issues.
- Innovative communities and organisations
willing to embrace and drive change.
